Scottish Government Seeks Public Input on Wellbeing and Sustainable Development Bill

The Scottish Government has launched a consultation into the proposed Wellbeing and Sustainable Development Bill, and is seeking public opinions to shape the framework of the potential legislation.

The proposed legislation aims to improve decision-making processes and the execution of the National Performance Framework, investigating opportunities to strengthen accountability and scrutiny of the National Outcomes.

The Wellbeing and Sustainable Development Bill aligns with the Scottish Government’s priorities, as outlined in the 2023 Policy Prospectus ‘Equality, Opportunity, Community’, emphasising the government’s commitment to establishing a Wellbeing Economy for both people and the planet. The 2023-24 Programme for Government recognises the interconnected nature of its missions, aiming to create a substantial positive impact on the lives of Scotland’s residents.

Frances Guy, Chief Executive of Scotland’s International Development Alliance, said:
“We are delighted to see that the Government is consulting on a Wellbeing and Sustainable Development Bill. The Bill is an opportunity for Scotland to demonstrate joined-up policymaking, linking global and domestic priorities, alongside human and environmental wellbeing. It’s clearer than ever before that our systems are not working for people, or for the planet. This legislation would bring a step change in the way decisions are made in Scotland, ensuring sustainable development and wellbeing become the main drivers of policy and practice across public life”.

The Scottish Government is actively seeking responses from individuals and organisations across Scotland. Read the consultation paper and share your views below:
