Methodology

This research aimed to map our member’s contributions to the SDGs. This mapping exercise was underpinned by the following objectives:

  1. To determine the number of members that work towards each of the 17 SDGs, and in which countries.
  2. To explore the impact our members are having through specific programmes.

A mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to address these objectives. To meet the first objective, an online survey was created by an external research consultant. This method was selected due to its accessibility and ease of distribution.

The questions included in the survey were based on the first study objective. These questions are available upon request. The survey was distributed by email to all SIDA members in June 2023. It was also promoted on the SIDA website and newsletter between June and July.

From the 142 members who were sent the survey, 47 responded. While the survey responses were mostly completed in full, some lacked specific country data. To ensure this report provided an accurate reflection of our members contributions to the SDGs, SIDA researchers attempted to compile the missing data using information available on member websites and their public profile on SIDA’s database.

For 8 members, data was unavailable for the SDGs each was working towards. For 2 members, data was unavailable for the countries they worked in.

Consequently, the data presented in ‘Our impact at a glance” (see page 3 of the report) is not reflective of our full membership. The figures instead represent our minimum impact, with higher figures expected if data from all members was included.

To meet the second objective, interviews were conducted with members. Interview participation was advertised on the SIDA website and members also had the option to express their interest in participating as a response on the survey. This provided all members with the opportunity to participate in the interviews. Based on initial interest, 14 members were invited to interview. Due to availability, 12 of these members participated in interviews. The interviews were conducted in English, with one interviewee requiring the use of a translator. They took place virtually using Microsoft Teams and were transcribed using the transcription service included with Microsoft Teams.

The questions asked were based on the second objective. These are available upon request. The number of questions included, and the detail of each response was limited by the timescale and the knowledge of those involved in the interviews. The content from the interviews is intended to provide an insight into the impact our members are having through specific programmes. It is therefore not representative of our overall membership, or the full impact of the members included. Providing such details for every member is out with the scope of this report.

Rather than restrict our members’ work to a single SDG, the content of each interview has been presented throughout the report to emphasise the interconnectedness of the SDGs.

All data collected is available upon request.
