IIED

IIED ( International Institute for Environment and Development) is an independent, non-profit organisation promoting sustainable patterns of world development through collaborative research, policy studies, networking and knowledge dissemination. Our mission is to provide expertise and leadership in researching and achieving sustainable development at local, national, regional and global levels. In alliance with others we seek to help shape a future that ends global poverty and delivers and sustains efficient and equitable management of the world’s natural resources. Our key strength is a worldwide network of partners with whom we seek to transform decision-making through research, communication, stakeholder engagement and capacity-building. This enables IIED to have influence beyond pure research. At a time when swift change is the norm, IIED finds solutions to the shifting array of challenges by focusing on five big issues: Climate Change, Governance, Human Settlements, Natural Resources and Sustainable Markets. Three core principles guide our work:

–          A focus on ‘local to global’ solutions ensures the concerns of poor, vulnerable and marginalised people are heard by international policymakers.

–          An openness to flexible, adaptable solutions means we approach challenges with the necessary mix of perspectives and expertise.

–          A tradition of challenging conventional wisdom through original thinking has helped to reframe issues and prompted healthy debate.

The following IIED research groups are represented in Scotland: Climate Change Group, Natural Resources Group and Sustainable Markets Group. The staff of IIED’s Scotland office work in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guyana, Kenya, Laos, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nepal, Peru, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda – to name but a few. In Scotland we wish to establish in-depth and long-standing partnerships of mutual respect and equality through which we can jointly source funds to address the programmatic issues listed above.
