Charity Education International (CEI) has been actively working in a poverty-stricken locality of northern Bangladesh, providing opportunities for educational advancement, support for health education and facility, and the relief of poverty though direct help and employment generation, and in furtherance thereof;
• To implement appropriate selected education programmes and projects;
• To promote greater awareness of the importance of education;
• To assist in skill development through education and training;
• To promote hygiene and sanitation, and provide medical help and support health education;
• To help in promoting adult literacy and poverty alleviation.
Since its inception, CEI has been supporting various developments at Uttar Bangla College (North Bengal College) which has been helping the poor and the needy with educational advancement and skill improvement. Two more recent projects which CEI has also been supporting are Kakina Rural Health Centre (KRHC) and the Adult Literacy and Poverty Alleviation (ALPA) programme. All these three projects are located in northern Bangladesh (at Kakina in Lalmonirhat district). Uttar Bangla College (UBC) is the major CEI-supported project.
Currently over 1,800 students are studying in various courses at UBC. All the three major disciplines (Humanities, Science and Business Studies) are taught at the HSC level (A-level equiv), as are Degree courses. A major achievement of the institution was when three years ago honours courses were introduced in four key subjects (English, Economics, Accountancy and Management). This should prove particularly helpful to the students (especially female students) of this poverty stricken part of the country who are finding it very difficult to gain the necessary education and skill for accessing jobs.
