CBM UK

CBM UK is a member of CBM Global Disability Inclusion, which with over a century’s experience of working with people with disabilities, is a global leader in disability inclusive development, working through practical programmes, technical advisory services and advocacy in low and middle-income countries.

CBM’s approach has informed the sector by implementing model projects; influencing mainstream organisations; developing open source tools; providing disability technical advice and supporting Organisations of People with Disabilities (OPDs) to play a more active role and be their own voice. Disability inclusion is both the lens through which we conduct all our work, and a key programmatic priority in itself.

We are committed to ensuring that people with disabilities are included and involved in all development and humanitarian activity, not just that led by CBM. Thus, we take a twin track approach to disability inclusion:

• Disability-specific CBM initiatives to support the participation and self-empowerment of people with disabilities
• Supporting other agencies to mainstream disability by removing the barriers faced by people with disabilities through the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development and humanitarian policies and programmes.
CBM Global Disability Inclusion works alongside and is accountable to people with disabilities. We work with the most marginalised in society to
• Break the cycle of poverty and disability.
• Treat and prevent conditions that lead to disability.
• Build inclusive communities where everyone can enjoy their human rights and achieve their full potential. The world’s shared challenges and opportunities are too great to not have all voices heard around the table.

We maximise our impact by delivering a combination of inclusive programmes (community- based inclusive development, inclusive eye health and neglected tropical diseases programmes, community mental health and humanitarian action), advocacy for national and global policy change and inclusion advice to other organisations.

We do this because one in seven of us have disabilities, which is more than a billion people around the world – 80% of whom live in the Global South.
