6th & 12th October 2020
Trainer: Catriona Knapman
Topics: photography, communications, power and privilege, informed consent
This interactive workshop provided a space to reflect on, discuss and develop responsible strategies for the use of images in the international development and humanitarian sector, focusing on consent, participation and messaging. It broke down the idea of images, what they convey and who has the power to decide what images we use to represent our work. It examined whether images reflect organisational values, how they reflect the people we work with and the approaches we should take to ensure photos are responsible and embody our values.
What the training covered:
- Critically reflecting on the power of the lens and using images as a means of empowerment
- Understanding what informed consent means in practice
- Identifying uses for photography within our work including for communication, fundraising, campaigns, and monitoring, evaluation and learning
- Identifying good practice using photography for international development
- Creating strategies and approaches which help us to think about how photos can align and represent our values
