At our upcoming 2021 Alliance AGM, up to four trustees are to be elected to the Alliance Board of Trustees. Could you be the right fit?
For a membership organisation, a board needs to represent the full diversity of our membership but equally needs a range of skills.
The Board is looking for experience in human resources, private sector organisations, policy and digital communications but above all, a passion for promoting international development.
There will be up to four vacant positions that can be elected at this year’s AGM amd we encourage all organisational members to consider nominating new trustees for the Board.
A candidate needs to be nominated by two full organisational members but does not themself need to be part of an organisational member. We also strongly encourage members to consider nominating individuals who are not based in Scotland and work for partner organisations in different countries.
Please note, absolute deadline for nominations is 12 noon on Thursday 11th November 2021.
What does the Board do?
The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing documents, legal and regulatory guidelines. The Board meets four times per year and some board members also sit on sub-committees for Finance, HR/Safeguarding, Policy and Membership. More information is available on the nomination form.
What do trustees have to do?
Trustees have an important role to play in the governance of our organisation. Amongst other things trustee duties include:
- Ensuring the charity complies with legislative and regulatory requirements
- Promoting and developing the charity in order for it to maintain its relevance to society.
- Maintaining sound financial management of the charity’s resources
- Interviewing, appointing and monitoring the work and activities of the senior paid staff.
- Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the charity and its resources, striving for best practice in good governance.
Full information about the role of a trustee is available on the nomination form.
What time commitment is expected?
Over the course of a calendar year, Trustees are expected to attend at least three out of the four board meetings, as well as the board away day. If they sit on any of the board’s subcommittees, they will be invited to attend quarterly meetings of the relevant subcommittee as well. Board members would be expected to attend a minimum of 75% of meetings of any sub-committees they sign up to, in addition to the board meetings and away day.
