New leadership announced for the Diaspora Group for Global Citizenship

The Diaspora Group for Global Citizenship (DGGC) is pleased to announce the appointment of new co-chairs and a secretary, marking an exciting new chapter for the group’s work across Scotland and beyond.

The DGGC brings together diaspora community leaders, academics, and activists committed to advancing diaspora leadership and racial justice. Its vision is of a Scotland where every community helps shape its global impact, and a world where everyone can thrive in a fair, inclusive, and just society, free from racism. The group works to influence policy, support more equitable and decolonial approaches to global development, and promote greater understanding of global citizenship and cultural diversity across communities.

Taking on the role of Co-Chair (National), Mya Chemonges-Murzynowska brings a wealth of experience as a community organiser and advocate. As co-founder of the African Caribbean Asian and Mixed Heritage Association (ACAMHA) and Chair of Kenyans in the Highlands, she has been instrumental in creating inclusive spaces where communities can share, learn, and celebrate their heritage. Mya also sits on the SIDA board of trustees.

Joining her as Co-Chair (Global Justice), Aneel Singh Bhopal brings over a decade of experience in the third sector, spanning equality, refugee support, and community development. In his current role as Deputy Director of the West of Scotland Regional Equality Council, he continues to work at the intersection of human rights and social justice, with a strong focus on policy and community engagement.

Supporting the group as Secretary, MD Rezaur Rahman brings a strong combination of lived experience and academic insight. A PhD researcher at Queen Margaret University, his work focusses on social integration and the impact of community connections. He also serves as a Community Relationships Specialist with Police Scotland and is Chair of the West Lothian Community Race Forum. Across all of his work, MD plays a leading role in promoting racial equality, global citizenship and fostering inclusive communities in Scotland.

Hosted and supported by Scotland’s International Development Alliance, the DGGC continues to connect diaspora voices, bringing valuable insight and leadership to Scotland’s global justice landscape and a strong collective voice to advocate on behalf of diverse communities.
