A special joint meeting of the Malawi and International Development Cross-Party Groups will be held on Tuesday 11th March, with the opportunity to hear from members of a visiting delegation from the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS).
KUHeS has had a long-term partnership with the Scottish Government as well as several Scottish Universities, including the Blantyre-to-Blantyre longitudinal health study. We will hear what these partnerships and funding have meant, and continue to mean, for KUHeS’ development, including the ability to take control of allocating that investment at a local level, a key part of working towards better localisation. The event will be chaired by Sarah Boyack MSP.
A notable achievement of this partnership has been the establishment and development of a local dental programme, funded by the Scottish government. Before this initiative, Malawian students had to pursue dental training abroad.
Members of the delegation are:
- Professor Sosten Chiotha, Chairperson of Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) Council.
- Prof. Macpherson Mallewa, Vice Chancellor.
- Mr Christopher Namagowa, Registrar.
- Dr Benjamin Kumwenda, Director of Student Affairs (Scottish Government Projects’ Lead).
- His Excellency Dr Thomas Bisika, Malawi High Commissioner to The United Kingdom.
